HI CORP. and JDISK announce networked storage system "StorageCapsule" (tentative name) for mobile users
Sept. 10, 2002 (Tokyo, Japan)-Mobile 3D rendering technology pioneer HI CORPORATION (head office: Meguro-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Kazuo Kawabata; paid-in capital: 139.25 million yen; http://www.hicorp.co.jp) and JDISK Corporation (head office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; president: Hiroyuki Taniguchi; paid-in capital: 117.82 million yen; http://www.jdisk.ne.jp), today announced "StorageCapsule," the tentative name for a networked storage system for mobile users that stores and provides access to mobile content through users' mobile environments.
With the penetration of mobile phones, a tremendous variety of mobile content has developed for users; however, the amount of available storage space is facing a critical limit. As middleware for mobile phones, "StorageCapsule" provides mobile, networked storage for safekeeping of mobile content accumulated by mobile users. Binary data located in specific memory locations on a device can be read and re-written with the "StorageCapsule" API, and thus be synchronized with a storage apparatus on the Internet. "StorageCapsule" enables secure network storage of all types of content including ringing tones, email, images, 3D data, and motion video.
"StorageCapsule" can be enabled in various mobile operating environments, including Native C, Java, BREW, and Symbian.

"StorageCapsule" Features |
| Completely software-based |
Requires no special hardware. |
| Space saving |
The size of the engine to be embedded in the mobile phone is an extremely compact 50 KB. |
| Small data transfer volume |
A proprietary data management mechanism extracts differential data, and transmits compressed differential data only (*patent pending). |
| Binary differential |
Binary differential
Instead of employing a differential mechanism that uses XML or other tag-based languages, differential management of binary data is possible, including any kind of multimedia data (*patent pending). |
| Plentiful client devices |
EBeyond the obvious embedding into mobile phone handsets, client modules for PC's, Pocket PC's, and Palm PDA's are available also.
EStorage locations can be accessed from the Web; therefore, any device with Web access can perform data maintenance. |
| Light-weight server |
Portability and redundancy are enhanced with the use of Java Servlets on the server. |
